Detailed Description
Leaving Hobart at approximately 8:00 AM, you will meet your guide on Elizabeth Street, from there you will head towards by bus to the Derwent River Valley, through the historic village of New Norfolk, up Mt. Field National Park, and Russell Falls, visiting Salmon Ponds (optional) on the way.
The Salmon Ponds and Trout Hatchery will transport you to the past, between the historic buildings and the trout incubator, all within the original "garden of pleasure" of magnificent trees, hedges and grass, surrounding a large pond full of trout (rainbow, brown , brook trout and tiger) and salmon, with screens that explain the annual cycle of fish farming activities. Salmon Ponds is the oldest trout incubator in the southern hemisphere, in operation since 1864.
Russell Falls is one of the most treasured places in Tasmania. The falls delight all visitors and can be reached by a very easy path that may be suitable for some wheelchair users and those with strollers. You can return from the falls by the same trail or follow the stream by crossing the bridge below the falls.
Located in Mt Field National Park, this trail will take you through a mixed forest formed by imposing swamp gums, the highest flowering plant on Earth and typical species of humid forests and cold temperate rainforests, such as dogwood, musk and myrtle. Towards the falls, the track is framed by impressive arborescent ferns.
From Mount Field, your group will travel the short distance to Curringa Farm, an award-winning 750-acre (304-hectare) sheep and crop farm, located near Hamilton in the Southern Midlands. This farm allows you to experience shearing sheep, work sheep dogs, walks in the woods and river views. Much of the morning will be spent here, culminating with a barbecue lunch.
From the Curringa farm, the tour will continue on the other side of the Derwent River towards Brighton, where you can spend an hour watching the native Tasmanian animals at the Bonorong wildlife sanctuary. Here you can learn first-hand about the Tasmanian wildlife, including the Tassie Devil, forest kangaroos, Wallabies, Wombats, Koalas and many more. Finishing the tour in the same place you left in the morning.
