Detailed Description
This dog sledding tour of 6 hours is designed for those who love the outdoors and wish to experience an authentic Alaskan mushing experience driving your own dog team. Meet your guide at the offices and upon your arrival, you will be welcomed into our cozy, off-grid cabin where you can change into warm winter clothes.
If needed, we will supplement your gear with our own expedition-level parkas and/or over mitts. We want to ensure that you will be warm and comfortable your entire trip! Then, it is time to head outside. We will give you a lesson on how to drive the sled and you will assist your guide in harnessing the teams. When everything is ready, the dogs will be barking and hammering on the lines, eager to go. Hang on to the handle bar.
We will release the sleds and whoosh, sudden silence accentuated by the sound of runners whisking over the snow and the quiet pitter patter of dog paws. You have a say in where we will go. We may choose to drop down into the river valley, where cold air congregates and covers the world in crystals. We can wind through thick clusters of crooked black spruce, coated with fragile hoarfrost.
Or, perhaps we will stay up top, where rabbit tracks criss-cross sparkling fields of snow, and golden winter sun flirts with us through the birch forest. It is a fairy tale landscape and ours to explore. When we find a cozy spot, we will stop. We will build a fire, sit on warm reindeer skins and enjoy campfire lunch with hot drinks and home baked cakes for dessert.
Upon our return, we will unharness the dogs and thank them for the trip before heading inside where we can remove our frost covered outerwear and sit in front of the woodstove for one last warming drink before we say good-bye.

Frequently Asked Questions
-
Are your tours suitable for families with small children?
Yes! Especially if the kids love dogs and puppies :) Keep in mind that longer tours may present more of a challenge for little ones as they may not yet have the patience to appreciate the time spent sitting still and appreciating nature. We recommend our shorter 2-hour Tour for families with kids. Depending on your guide's discretion, kids may even be able to drive their own dog team.
-
Can I really drive my own dog sled?
YES! 99% of our clients have never stepped foot on a dog sled before. If you can walk across a parking lot, with the proper instruction, environment, and encouragement, the sky's the limit. If you are still concerned about your ability to drive the sled, please give us a call. We will do our best to accommodate your needs.
-
What do I wear for my dog sled tour?
Due to our location in the hills, it is usually significantly warmer (20 to 30 degrees F) at the Arctic Dog homestead than in Fairbanks, Two Rivers, or North Pole. You will still need to be properly outfitted to enjoy your tour, cold hands and feet will put a damper on your experience quickly! We can provide you with expedition level parkas to go over your own clothes, hats, gloves, in some cases, footwear, but you will need to come prepared with good socks, base layers, and insulating layers.
