Detailed Description
This half day walk along the Kepler track has two departure times, one at 8:15 AM and the other at 1:15 PM, meeting with your guide at the Real Journeys Visitor Center Te Anau. The tour begins by traveling on Lake Te Anau in a water taxi to the Bay of Brod, with its crystal clear waters and white sands. From here, you will enjoy a magnificent walk following the edge of the lake through the old beech forest. The track has a smooth gradient and is well maintained, suitable for all skills. You will be amazed as you explore the area and hear the call of native birds in the lush forest.
Your local Trips and Tramps guide will show you the native fauna and flora, explain the unique ecological cycle and share conservation efforts on the Kepler trail and around Fiordland. This guided half-day walk is an excellent introduction to the area and a great opportunity to learn more about the Fiordland World Heritage Area.
You will have the opportunity to stop and take pictures on a beautiful beach where you will enjoy tea, coffee, and cookies while you admire the breathtaking view. Halfway through the guided walk, you will leave the forest to cross the Control Gates, this concrete structure that provides a dam to control the flow of water from Lake Te Anau. From here, the track opens up and travels through the open grass land to the Wildlife Park. In the park, you will have the chance to see the rare flightless Takahē, now restricted to the grasslands of the Murchison Mountains of Fiordland, native waterfowl, weka, parakeets, tui, kea, and pigeons. At the end of the walk, you will return to the same place where you started.

Frequently Asked Questions
-
Where do your tours depart from?
Our Milford Sound tours and guided walks (except Milford Track) depart from the Te Anau township. Accommodation pickups within the town boundaries are available if details are provided. Alternatively, our central pick up is the Real Journeys office, Lakefront Drive. The exception is our Milford Track 1/2 day guided walk which departs from Milford Sound and you will need to make your own way there.

Why the early starts in Summer?
Yes, we do like to leave fairly early in the morning, and you are on holiday but we do so for a very good reason! We wish to maximize the quality of your day by avoiding the midday crowds at Milford Sound and making the most of the calmer morning weather conditions. Every fine, sunny day during summer months results in a strong day breeze developing mid to late morning which causes the fiord to chop up. Our early starts making the most of the calmer water conditions for excellent photo opportunities and brilliant wildlife observing.
