Detailed Description

Day 1 - Arrival

Arrival in Clifden. A warm welcome and the opportunity to settle. You will be given your route notes and general information and your bicycles and equipment will be delivered to your accommodation. Then, you will get to know the place where you will spend the first night. Clifden is a small and colourful city, also often labelled as the "Capital of Connemara". There are many restaurants where you can choose a delicious dinner and a large selection of traditional pubs where you will often find Irish music.

Day 2 - Clifden to Renvyle (35km to 45km)

After a hearty breakfast, you will depart along Sky Road, you can choose between taking a long way or the short way. You will enjoy the fabulous views of the Atlantic Ocean and its islands. Travelling on quiet back roads, you will pass through the picturesque fishing village of Cleggan and continue to Letterfrack, home of the Connemara National Park. Then, your trip will take you to the Renvyle Peninsula, which is full of history and archaeological sites and is famous for its pristine sandy beaches and spectacular views of the Twelve Ben mountain range. This will be the place where you will spend the second night.

Day 3 - Renvyle to Leenane (26 km)

Leaving Renvyle after a hearty breakfast. You will travel across Tullycross with its straw huts and wander along the coast walking along perfect beaches to the small town of Leenane, located at the head of the only fjord in Ireland. You can take the boat along the Killary Fjord for a sightseeing expedition from 10:30 AM until 4:30 PM, the trip will last 1.5 hours on the Connemara Lady catamaran. Tonight you will spend the night in Leenane.

Day 4 - Leenane to Lough Inagh (23 km)

After breakfast, you will continue the journey leaving Leenane. You will head towards the mountains on a road that crosses moors filled with lakes to the dazzling Inagh Valley. You will have the option of visiting one of the most important tourist attractions in Ireland, Kylemore Abbey & Gardens. This gothic fairytale castle, located on a wooded hillside, is one of the best gardens in Ireland. The six-acre walled Victorian garden in Kylemore was created by Mitchell Henry in conjunction with the construction of Kylemore Castle in 1867. He has won the prestigious Europa Nostra Garden Prize. Tonight you will stay in cosy accommodation with spectacular views of Lough Inagh.

Day 5 - Lough Inagh to Roundstone (28 km)

You will travel again on your bike to the coast today, leaving behind the mountains as you head towards Roundstone. You will travel along a route dotted with beautiful fishing villages. You will travel peat bogs and beautiful moors still divided by the Neolithic field systems. Your trip will take you to the region of Gaeltacht (Gaelic speaking), which is considered the last bastion of Celtic Ireland. You will rest tonight in the small and picturesque fishing village of Roundstone.

Day 6 - Roundstone to Clifden (24 km)

After breakfast, you will start the day with a gentle cycle along Mannin Bay. With its coral beach and its glorious turquoise bay, it is a paradise for beach lovers. This route takes it past Ballyconneely, or it can be shortened by taking Bog road. The Roundstone swamp is unique in that it is a virgin area of Bogscape with rare avid acid plants. You will arrive at your initial destination of Clifden where you will spend the last night enjoying the "fun" in this vibrant city, one of the last authentic treasures of Western Europe.

  1. How do I get to the starting point of the tour?

Some tour starting points will have a direct bus or train service (Clifden and Westport). Prior to booking your tour, you can check out details on our Getting to/from tours page and you can also check the timetables for the national bus service at Bus Eireann or the private company Citylink and the national rail service at Irishrail.

Connemara Adventure Tours can also provide details of taxi services for starting points that need an additional transfer other than bus or rail. The other travel option is to check out car hire. Check out more information on our Getting to/from tours page.

  2. How healthy and fit do I need to be for this tour?

Most tours are active holidays and require at least moderate fitness levels as per their description. Tours may involve 4 - 6 hours walking, or 3 - 5 hours cycling per day. Checking the suitability of each tour can help you to avoid disappointment. Those unaccustomed to activity are advised to take gentle exercise before the tour to fully enjoy the experience. You need to advise us of any special medical, physical, or health requirements you may have, particularly conditions such as diabetes, epilepsy, asthma, disabilities, severe allergies etc. and any medication you may be on prior to arrival.

  3. What kind of bikes are used for your tours and what equipment do you provide with them?

We have two types of bikes available for our cycling tours. We use Standard Touring Bicycles for all our tours and we also have an upgrade available to Hybrid Bicycles.

Please check out our Bike Information page for all the details of our bikes.

The upgrade hybrid bicycles are standard on all our Luxury Tours. Guests on all other tours can upgrade to a Hybrid bicycle for an extra charge.
We also provide bicycle helmet, high-visibility jacket, water bottle, front handlebar bag, repair kit, pump, and lock. We can also provide side panniers if requested (€ 20.00 EUR extra charge), as well as toe clips. You can bring your own pedals if you wish and we will fit them for you. The bikes are equipped with back racks but not mud guards. Maps and route notes are also provided for all our cycling tours.

  4. Do I need to bring a power adapter?

Electricity is 230V AC in the Republic and 240V AC in Northern Ireland. Plugs are three-pin flat but 2-pin round wall sockets are also found. British electrical appliances will work everywhere. North American appliances require a transformer and a plug adapter. Australian and New Zealand appliances need just a plug adapter.
