Detailed Description
This is a tour that starts in Portland at 9:00 AM and ends at 4:30 PM. It will take you on Sunset Highway, the first Oregon motor route through the Cascade Range.
As you go along Sunset Highway, you will pass through a lush forest of Sitka firs to first find the Oregon Coast through Ecola State Park. Once there, we will momentarily leave the vehicle and explore this coastal oasis. If time permits, we can also travel through the forest to the beach of India.
When leaving the park, you will make a quick excursion to nearby Cannon Beach, a piece of coastline punctuated spectacularly by Haystack Rock, a seafront beachfront that became famous for its resemblance to its namesake.
Affirmed as the third highest "intertidal" structure in the world, it is a huge basalt rock formed by lava flows more than 15 million years ago! Here you can take pictures to remember. In addition, you will explore the walk along the sandy beach, we will see beautiful birds surrounding the rock (tufted puffins, pelagic cormorants and western gulls if the time is right) and if we are lucky and the tide is low, we will see many species of fauna marine in its natural habitat of the tide.
After this beach tour you will make a stop in the town of Cannon Beach for lunch. Continuing with the program you will pass through the famous Pacific Coast Scenic Byway, on Highway 101, exploring the most beautiful coasts and once in Neahkahnie Overlook, you will find breathtaking views along the highest point accessible by car along the coast of Oregon.
The trip that will take us back will take us along Highway 101 to Oswald West State Park where depending on the weather, we can choose to take a wooded walk along Short Sand Creek, which opens to a stacked coast of floating wood known as Smugglers Cove. A variable of this stop would be a brief visit to Hug Point.
**This tour includes several short hikes (.25-.5 miles), loose sand, and/or steps to beach access points. As one of our most dynamic tours available, we encourage guests to get out and explore!
